You can't, unless you remove the battery! There is no off switch on either the official Nikon MC-36 or the copies! The battery will last a very long time though, even though it's always powering the LCD screen, so it's not too big of an issue.

Cheers for presenting a solution, (albeit a pretty obvious one, which I'm kicking myslef for not thinking of sooner!) to my time lapse problem. I have been struggling to get my D70 to work as a time lapse system. The lack of a shutter release cable port on the D70 is a major problem, i have got round it using Nikon Capture running on a netbook but it would always crash at some point. I also tried using an IR intervalometer purchased here (http://www.bigmike.it/ircontrol/intervalometer.html) but that is even more flaky than the netbook and is so inflexible in terms of its interval settings that it is practically useless. I had thought of using the D200 I also have, but the limitation of 999 shots was a severe frustration. I used this to record pond snail eggs hatching and tadpoles but it was a real nightmare to keep resetting the camera. This gadget would be a great way to get round this problem.
Cheers

First, thanks for the recommendation for the timers. Mine arrived this morning and you could be forgiven thinking that it's a Canon branded one. It looks and feels identical expect for one small aspect which is the little thumb-wheel that turns to dial in the amount of long exposure is a little 'springy'. I think the Canon thumb-wheel has a better 'feel' to it but at a saving of about £90, I'll manfully cope with it!

Cheers again.

Hi David, yep dropping a timer remote in a tide pool will definitely cause a problem! I was really pleased with this copy though so can only recommend giving them a try (of course quality could vary depending on where you get it from but I've seen two different ones now and they were both the same quality).

Thanks. Looks a good purchase. I have, or rather had, the Canon TC 80N3 (for use on very long exposures) and having paid £99 for it from HK about two years ago, I recently dropped it into a tide pool since when it's gone on strike. Glad to read that this seems robust as some after-market remotes can be a bit lacking in that aspect.
