I keep most lens I buy as they have some use, I have had an old 50 Ai lens for years, I bought a new 50 1.4 AFS but just could not get on with it, wanting a standed auto focus lens this lens just did not perform well, I have sold it now and bought a 35 f2 Nikon lens as a replacement, I love the 35mm, it is a much better lens, that is my new standed.

Hi,

Very nice review (I came here from the dslrusers forum). I have the older f1.4D version of this 50mm lens, and love it.

Regarding the images opening in a new blank page: it looks as though you are using the elegant lightbox javascript for image display. I remember reading somewhere that this requires the webpage to have completed loading. I know that on my website, if you click a lightbox image before the page has finished loading, then it opens the image in a new blank page.

Hallo!

Came here via your thread on this lens on dslrusers forums - I only joined today but have been thinking of either this lens or the 35mm 1.8 as my first prime, and this has been a fantastic review and really helpful. The shots you've taken are great illustrations of it's capabilities and the stitched photos just incredible, especially Bath..

So I'm hereby subscribing to your blog, along with everyone else - being such a noob I've a ton to learn about dslr photography, and would love to read more of your work. Just went to your main site - that owl shot! Holy cow! OvO

Hi Richard,

I was glad to come across this review of the 50mm 1.4! Lot's of good info. I got here by attempting to look up the issue I'm having with my 1.4 and I figured I'd ask since you seem pretty knowledgeable. I can't get my lens to lock focus when i half press the button down. After I focus on something I half press to lock and then I move a little to adjust how the picture is framed and it refocuses! I can't understand this. Have you had any issues like that? I wasn't sure if it was something I was doing wrong or if it is just the nature of the lens. Any info would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Hi Nils, glad you enjoyed the review. I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't %100 sure with regards to the lens sharpness (I've read reports that it IS sharper than the 24-70 though, so maybe there are some bad copies out there?!).

As for focus fine tune, I set mine by focusing on something at a bit further than min focus distance, with a ruler or tape measure next to the target so I can see where the DOF falls. Real world usage is the most important factor though, mine is set at -3 and seems fine there.
